McCain's "Gamble" With Our Future

Today, the day after John McCain announced that Sarah Palin, the unknown governor of Alaska, would be his Vice Presidential running mate, the headlines used word such as "gamble," "rolls the dice," and "chance." John McCain is taking a big chance on the future of the US, and I know I for one am not willing to play the odds!

McCain has chosen a running mate that has even less experience than Barack Obama and Joe Biden, and that has been one of the major criticisms of the McCain campaign in this election thus far. So what does John McCain do? Picks someone that is only a heartbeat away from being Commander-In-Chief with NO national experience at all! Let's face it, John McCain is 72 years old and has fought cancer. I know he could live another 20 years, but the odds of him doing so are not that great.

Wake up America! Don't "roll the dice" on our future. Look at which candidate has the most to offer for the change, and stability, we need.

Summer's End Is Near

I can't believe it's already the middle of August. Today at the supermarket I was some mums for sale. Not only mums, but "hardy" mums. They looked very nice, but you know what that means? Autumn is not far from us. I've had a great summer, and look forward to enjoying the rest of it. But soon, it will be back to school, football, jackets, nippy nights, and early evenings.

Jesse Made Us Stronger

The picture to the left appeared in the latest edition of The Advocate (August 26, 2008), along with an article, "Ding-Dong, Jesse Helms is Dead."

For those who don't know it, Helms was the former North Carolina senator who passed away July 4, 2008 at the ripe old age of 87. Helms was a bigotted southern gentleman. He was known to whistle racist songs to black elected officials, and, as evidenced by transcripts from any number of Senate hearings, he had an amazing obsession with butt sex. And he hated gays. What do you say when someone like Helms dies? The Advocate said it best: "First Jerry Falwell, now Jesse Helms. One by one, the famous bigots of America are contributing their best (and last) service to this nation’s progress -- they’re dying."

But what people like Helms do sometimes has an opposite effect. Helms and others like him actually cause those they target to ban together and take action against the hatred and injustice.
"...he made us stronger, prodding us to organize among ourselves and with the other evildoers—including the abortion-havers and the immigrants who want to take your jobs."

But unfortunately, the Helms of the world will continue to exist. But fortunately, their influence seems to have lessened. Men like Fred Phelps of “God Hates Fags” fame look like madmen, not prophets. One can only hope that as we evolve as a society, these attitudes slowly disappear for all.

Weighing In On John Edwards

By now I'm sure everyone has heard about John Edward's admission of an affair with another woman. My reaction may have been much less shocked than some. I really wasn't surprised. Not even surprised that it was John Edwards, who seems such the dedicated husband and family man.

The more I live, the less I am shocked or surprised by such news. I don't feel a sense of wrong with this news any longer. I'm not suggesting what Edwards did was right in anyway. It's not just news about cheating husbands, but news in general, that doesn't have the shock value anymore. There is so much going on in the world, why would anything come as a surprise?

Wanna know what else I think? The baby in question is Edwards too, and that will soon be proven.

I'm Glad We'll Keep That Dangerous Terrorist In Prison

Thank God Salim Hamdan, Osama bin Laden's former driver is off the streets! Thank God he was the first person to be tried as a terrorist before a military panel at Guantanamo. Tried and convicted, facing life in prison. Hamdan was convicted of supporting terrorism but acquitted on more serious charges of conspiring with al Qaeda to wage murderous attacks.

Here we have a Yemeni man, probably poor and just trying to help out his family. He's offered a job by bin Laden to drive him around. Al Qaeda suspects have stated that Hamdan knew nothing of any plots. He was just a driver! They must be lying! This man supported terrorism! But did he? I guess we'll never know for sure, but my guess is he is no more a terrorist than the drivers for President Bush sign bills into law!

Was the conviction of Hamdan a victory for the Bush administration? He was not convicted of conspiracy to committ terrorism and that is what the Bush administration needed to field a big win. Only time will tell.

I am so glad we're safer now.

Walmart Revisited

As stated in my previous post, I had contacted Walmart about the reported story that its managers were told NOT to support the democrats in the 2008 election. Walmart's response is that while it is against the Employee Free Choice Act, also known as "the card check bill," Walmart in no way encouraged its staff to vote one way or another. Here is the response I received from Jundie of Walmart.com:

Dear Karl,
My name is Jundie. I am with the Walmart.com Customer Service Team. Thank you for contacting us about the news story that ran in the Wall Street Journal on August 1, 2008. The article focused on the Employee Free Choice Act, also known as "the card check bill," and the training we provided to managers and hourly supervisors. It quoted several Wal-Mart associates who felt the training encouraged them to vote against democratic candidates, especially Senator Obama because of his strong support for labor unions. The training has concluded, but we want to assure you that as a company we are not taking sides in this election. If anyone representing Wal-Mart gave the impression we were telling associates how to vote, they were wrong and acting without approval. We will work to make sure misunderstandings like this do not happen again, regardless of the subject. We believe that the card check bill is bad for business and have been onrecord as opposing it for some time. We feel that educating our associates about the bill is the right thing to do. However, we are a bi-partisan company and our associates, just as the customers and communities we serve, reflect the wide range of attitudes and political diversity of this country. We work with both Republican and Democratic leaders and our political contributions reflect that as well -- this year we gave roughly half of our PAC dollars to each party. We are at the beginning of what will be a historic election and campaignperiod. Our company will remain bipartisan. We apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced.Thank you for visiting Walmart.com. We appreciate the opportunity to serve you and look forward to your next visit. If we may be of further assistance, please email us at help@walmart.com.We're here to serve you 7 days a week!!

Sincerely,
JundieCustomer Service at Walmart.com

I am still a bit skeptical, and the jury is still out for me on this one.

From Death To Walmart

The questions just keep on coming. My last post discussed my mind's battle with the death penalty. Today, I battle a less important, but maybe not, issue of to shop or not shop Walmart.
A few months ago, while having some friends over, we had a big debate on whether to shop Walmart or Target. Most of my friends were appalled when I told them I shopped Walmart regularly. It's more convenient for me and the prices are lower. When I've gone to Target, I have not had an easy time locating items, primarily because I do not know the layout of the store as well as Walmart, and I have paid a bit more at Target than at Walmart for the same items. My argument when my friends told me how unfair Walmart is to their employees and to the "causes" Walmart supports (mostly conservative, Republican causes), was that both stores are just as bad, or just as good. My opinion was both stores get their merchandise from child-slave labor, and both are just as good or bad to their employees. I even did an extensive google search of Walmart vs. Target, and for every bad thing I learned about Walmart, I learned something just as bad about Target.
However, just the other day it was reported that Walmart made their managers attend a meeting in which the managers were basically told not to vote for the democrats in November, and then given the reasons why a democratic president would be bad for business. The primary reason is Walmart is afraid its employees will stand a better chance of becoming Unionized under a democratic run legislature and president. Walmart has denied this, stating that managers were informed of the negative consequences should a democrat win the White House in November, but never were the managers coerced into voting Republican.
I wrote to Walmart asking them to stay out of politics and informing them I may not be shopping in their store any longer if this is true. Last night I needed an item and I made my way to the local Target to make my purchase. Maybe this will become a new shopping tradition for me?

To Kill, Or Not To Kill?

I go back and forth when it comes to the death penalty. Sometimes I feel there is a real need for a death sentence, and I realize that may be the "human" emotional part of me that vents when a heinous crime has been committed. Other times I think how sad it is that the State can legally "murder" someone while at the same time saying murder is wrong. The death sentence is also not always carried out fairly, those who have money and can find a good attorney or attorneys often get off while the poor, unfortunate ones, get the needle. In NJ, the debate is a mute point since the death penalty is no longer an option.

Recently in Alabama, the Alabama Supreme Court postponed executing a man after an inmate claimed in an sworn statement to defense attorneys that he committed the murder that sent the condemned man to death row. This is another reason for my position the death penalty should not exist; the fact that sometimes innocent people are executed. To me, one innocent life taken by the State is wrong. Throughout history, there have been many individuals executed when they did not commit the crime.

I guess when it comes down to it, I can see the death penalty in some cases in which there is clear evidence someone committed a murder. I am talking about cases where there are several witnesses or a video camera catching the event. Cases where there is irrefutable evidence the defendant committed the murder. But in instances when there is no clear cut evidence, circumstantial only, no witnesses, or other questions about the murder, I can see there being no death sentence.

So I guess the debate will continue in my mind.

Sordid Lives

If you haven't seen it yet, you've got to watch Logo's new series, Sordid Lives.

It comes on Logo, Channel 163 in my area, on Wednesday nights at 10:00PM with a repeat on Friday night at 10:30PM. (I'm sure it will be on Logo on Demand as well). The show centers around Ty, a confused young adult, and his crazy family. It is a hoot!

Sordid Lives stars Bonnie Bedelia, Rue McClanahan, Olivia Newton-John, Caroline Rhea, Beth Grant, Leslie Jordan, with cameos by Margaret Cho, Carson Kressley, Candis Cayne and Georgette Jones. One of the funniest characters is Leslie Jordan as "Brother Boy," a crazy cross dresser living in a mental institute and obsessed with Tammy Wynette. Brother boy is in the mental hospital to be "dehomosexualized." And you're not going to believe Olivia Newton-John is the sweet Olivia Newton-John we all know.

So check it out. Click here to see a clip from the first episode. Margaret Cho is the therapist to the young Ty.

Obama's Date With Destiny

While John McCain sat in a German restaurant in Ohio stating he would rather speak in Germany as President of the US and not just a presidential candidate, Barack Obama was in Berlin, Germany speaking to over 200,000 people about the future of America, the world, and I might add, demonstrating Obama's date with destiny. McCain said, “Well I’d love to give a speech in Germany to– a political speech –or a speech that maybe the German people would be interested in...” Sorry John, you weren't invited to speak, so maybe you need to stop speaking!

Has anyone else noticed that this election has been predicated on what Barack Obama says and does? John McCain is constantly responding to what happens with Obama. His campaign already seems dead and going nowhere! Even young Republicans are worried about McCain's appeal to the younger generation.

Barack Obama has the momentum and I am so confident he will be the President of the US come January. But we need to keep up the work and encourage all who will to support him.

Learning To Appreciate The Pig

As I grow older, I have learned to appreciate the pig! I am talking about the piggy you eat. The picture was taken in LaLoma, Quezon City, Manila, Philippines. That is the home of Lechon, or the roasted pig. Throughout the small town of LaLoma there are shops just like the one shown selling the lechon for about $100.00US each. Lechon is one of the most popular dishes in the Philippines, and like in other countries, including the US, lechon is eaten mostly at parties and family gatherings. Although I did not eat any lechon while in Manila, it looked delicious. (Once you can get past the head on the piggy).

A few weeks ago while in New York City, I ate at the Bayan Cafe, a small Filipino cafe, which I love. While there, I had Chicharon Buklaklak, deep-fried pork intestines. They were delicious, served with a vinegar dipping sauce.

I have heard it said that everything on the pig is edible except the Oink. I admit there's much to a pig I haven't tasted like the tail, feet, or snout, but the older I get, the more I love pork. So give me a nice chunk of piggy, the other white meat, anytime!

A Confused Bush?

What's up with George W? Why all of a sudden a shift in US policy? I'm actually getting scared!

Firstly, the Bush has had a shift in his adherence to "no timeline" on the withdrawl of troops from Iraq. Now, Bush has accepted a timeline, well what he's calling a "a general time horizon", for troop withdrawl from Iraq. "Mr. Bush, who has long derided timetables for troop withdrawals as dangerous, agreed to at least a notional one as part of the administration’s efforts to negotiate the terms for an American military presence in Iraq after a United Nations mandate expires at the end of the year."

Secondly, after years of refusing to do so, the United States on Saturday participated for the first time in international talks with Iran over its nuclear program. Perhaps to avoid military conflict with Iran? Who knows?

Why this change in policy? Why all of a sudden, after 7 years in office, has Bush realized what rationale Americans have been saying for quite some time? John McCain has bashed Barack Obama for his willingness to negotiate with countries that are not that friendly toward the US, Iran included.

Is it for real or is it politics as usual?

Isn't Idol Worship Idol Worship?

See any difference in this practice? One is the Mt. Carmel Festival in Hammonton, in which patrons pin money on the statue of St. Joseph. The other is the Babylonians worshipping a gold bull. What's the difference? Another of life's/religion's mysteries to me.

Goodbye, Starbucks....(Well, Some Anyway)

So instead of a Starbucks on every corner, there will only be one on every other corner in our cities. Starbucks has announced the closing of 600 stores and the cutting of 7% of its staff. I for one, cannot say I'm sorry to see it happen.

First of all, Starbucks coffee is not the best coffee available. For me, no matter what kind I have gotten, it's always bitter and tastes like sewer water. Yes, the steamed milk and sugar make it a little more tolerable, but it still has that burnt taste. Secondly, the outrageous price of Starbucks coffee hinges on exploitation of the masses. There is no reason why a simple cup of coffee should ever cost over $2.00! Thirdly, there are already too damn many Starbucks around. Why does one mall need 4 Starbucks? Why do two city blocks each need their own Starbucks?

Personally I prefer smaller coffee shops which offer much better tasting coffee at a lower price. On my recent weekend in NYC, the hotel had a Starbucks in the lobby, but I found a coffee shop across the street that was much better. A good cup of coffee was about $1.25. I would also much rather drink Dunkin' Donuts of McDonalds than Starbucks coffee to be quite honest.

So goodbye Starbucks! Not all but some! Maybe if you stop exploiting people with your ridiculous prices and nasty tasting coffee, you'll stay in business a bit longer. Just don't stop making and selling your Java Chip Ice Cream! That would really disappoint me!

On The Phone With The Obama Campaign

At 6:00PM tonight I participated in an Obama for America conference call with LGBT participants. I and 1200 others joined Steve Hildebrand, Deputy Campaign Manager of Obama for America, on a National LGBT conference call to discuss how the LGBT community can help Barack Obama. Senator Obama was off today, and was not a participant in today's call, but he will be joining another conference call within 2 weeks.

Mr. Hildabrand began the call by stating that this has been a truly historic primary. Firstly, the participants being a woman and an African American man was historic. Secondly, the fact that this primary went all the way to the end was historic. And thirdly, this primary brought thousands of new voters into the picture, people who never were interested in a campaign like this. Mr. Hildabrand wanted to extend a hand of warmth to the Hillary Clinton supporters participating in the call.

Elizabeth Birch, who helped found the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), was the first "guest speaker." Ms. Birch, a Clinton supporter, discussed what other Clinton supporters were feeling at this point. Ms. Birch described how she "burst into tears" on June 3, 2008 after realizing Hillary Clinton would not be the democratic nominee for President. Ms. Birch described Senator Clinton as a "warrior" and the pain felt as one would feel for a "vanquished warrior." Ms. Birch said that Obama supporters must be patient, and that it would take a few days for the Clinton supporters to come

Mr. Hildabrand stated that the campaign is quickly moving into "general election mode." State operations would soon be set up and there will be many offices in each of the 50 states. The Obama campaign has joined forces with the DNC. Hildabrand encouraged people to volunteer any way they can, as Senator Obama has done alot for civil rights, including gay rights, and we must do whatever we can to get him elected President in November.

Joe Solomonese, HRC, who was on a 3,000 mile AIDS bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles, joined the call, and stated that Obama, like Clinton, is an allie to the LGBT community. Obama has stated that the LGBT community is part of the fabric of America, and Obama has spoken to groups, including churches, and encouraged them to embrace their LGBT brothers. Solmonese stated that allowing McCain to be elected President in November would be a disaster. McCain has voted against the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes bill, has voted against workplace discrimination legislation, and thinks "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" is working just fine.

David Mixner, civil rights leader and author, was next in line in the call. Mixner was originally a John Edward supporter and he thanked the Obama campaign for welcoming him. Mixner said the Obama has openly opposed amendment initiatives in California and Florida to make gay marriage illegal. The moment is NOW to make change in this country according to Mixner.

Tobias Wolff, a political activist who got his political feet wet advising Democrat John Kerry during the 2004 election and now Chair of Obama's National LGBT Policy Committee, was the next person to speak on the call. Tobias said Obama is really interested in the issue of trust, especially for those Clinton supporters. Although not as well known as Clinton for supporting gay issues, Obama has a longstanding history of supporting gay rights in Ilinois. Wolff has spoken personally and knows the Senator's commitment to the LGBT community.

This ended the call and again it was stated by Hildabrand that Senator Obama would be joining in a call within the next 2 weeks. For me it was exciting to listen to the positive words about Senator Obama with regards to his support for the LGBT community.

There's Still The Pain

I happened upon this letter to the editor in The Press of Atlantic City online website the other day from a parent of a gay young adult:

Help gay students
feel safer in school

In the May 19 Education by the Numbers feature, one item mentioned that 33 percent of secondary-school principals say that gay, lesbian and bisexual students would feel safe in their schools. What about the other 67 percent? What are they doing to make their schools safe for all young people?
As a mother of a gay son who just graduated college, I was appalled by that low number. I would be interested in knowing what part of the country this info came from. Were the schools public or private, inner-city schools, small or large-sized schools?
While living in northern New Jersey, my husband and I attended Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays meetings. PFLAG of Bergen County has an excellent safe-schools program and a speakers bureau to educate those who have no idea what this is really all about.
I would hope that more principals would avail their schools of the service so as to better inform their staff and, in turn, their students concerning this extremely important matter.
CHRISTINE MILLARD
Egg Harbor Township

Ms. Millard's point: that although 33% of gay students feel safe, what about the other 67%?

Then I read this comment to Ms. Millard's letter and I could hardly believe what I read:

I am appalled there is any special effort to protect young people who decide to come out of the closet in any size or type of school system. School is not about there sexual orientation , it is to learn and move into the real world . If a kid has an abnormal interest in sex partners, they should keep it to themselves until they get out of school.
Posted by: social chemist on Wed May 28, 2008, 9:15 AM

To think that this is 2008! To believe that attitudes like this still exist is beyond me. It makes my blood boil when kids of any kind, gay, straight, black, white, fat, thin, etc. have to go to school fearing their safety. Then a moron like "social chemist" makes a statement such as above!

When are we going to get over discriminating against anyone for any reason? Then today in my mail I received some information about The Trevor Project, an organization based in California, that helps gay teens get through their difficult times. I urge you to check it out.

A Night At The Movies

I went to see Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull last night. I was not disappointed. Yes, the movie was unbelievable! Yes, Indiana Jones is old and in no way could do the things he did! Yes, it ended in a sort of stupid manner for me. BUT, Yes, it took me away for 2 hours and I had a good time! That to me is what's important in a movie!

The story goes pretty much the same as any other Indiana Jones movie. Indiana finds himself in some hot water in the beginning of the movie, and he manages to get out of it, then he is in his calm setting in the university, and then he gets the "call" that his help is needed, this time in Peru, then you meet the rest of the characters, and then the plot thickens, more action occurs, and Indiana wins and all is well. Full of action and scenery, full of the "gross" stuff that Indiana and companions meet, and full of the "that couldn't really happen" reaction from the viewers.

I had fun, and isn't that what a movie should be? Nothing I had to think about. Nothing I had to feel bad about. I didn't sit and watch 2 hours of real stuff, only fantasy. Just good old fun. Just an escape from the world for a couple of hours.

My next movie: Sex and the City. Then it's The Dark Knight. Maybe there will be a few in between, but most of them will be on DVD.

Stop the Crying, Hillary

"It's so unfair! They have to count all the votes, including Michigan and Florida! I will not give up until all the votes are counted!" That's how Hillary, and her husband Bill, I might add, are campaigning now that they are behind and it looks like Hillary will not be the democratic nominee for president. More politics on Hillary's part, as usual for her?
I think the rules that the Democratic National Committee adopted by not seating the Michigan and Florida delegates is just plain STUPID! I don't understand how the DNC can just not count people's votes just because the democratic party in a particular state went against the rules for the primary in that state. However, these are the rules that were adopted and that democrats have to live with. I am almost certain that Hillary and Bill probably had a say and a part in instituting these rules. Now that the rules of the DNC are working against Hillary, she's crying about it!
If roles were reversed, and Hillary was leading Obama in the delegate count, I am also certain Hillary and Bill would be shouting that, "These are the rules! Fair or not, we've got to live by them!" More of why I do not support Hillary anymore: she continues to play the politic game. She will do anything she has to to win!

GO OBAMA!

I Can Feel It Already

There isn't even a clear democratic nominee yet and already I can feel the pressure of the November election. I can feel my blood pressure starting to rise, and I know it will be an up-and-down roller coaster ride the entire campaign season.
George Bush got me so aggravated the other day when he spoke in the Israeli Kinnesset about "appeasement" of terrorist groups. Really, George? What is the harm in talking to countries such as Iran and North Korea? What is so bad about diplomacy? Is that "appeasement"? How in the world can we ever get along with other nations when we don't even know what it is that really bothers and upsets them about the US? I know; Bush always says it's that they hate our freedom. Well, Bush, maybe there's more to it than that! Could it be our arrogance? Could it be that the US has portrayed itself during the past 7+ years as the "god of the world"? Could it be that the US has become one big bully that nobody likes?
Then I read my friend Pax Romano's blog today and find this moron, Kevin James, also ranting about how bad Obama is going to be for the US and Israel. To make matters worse, this guy doesn't even know what the hell he's talking about!
It's going to be a long and intense campaign ahead. I am confident Obama can handle it. I'm sure he knows what he's in for. GO OBAMA!

Life: A Never Ending Battle

OK............Let me get philosophical on you.

The other day while driving to work after the torrential rain and damaging winds we experienced, I noticed a guy cleaning up along the road. I thought to myself that this man is cleaning up, only to have to do it again after the next storm comes along. Then I thought about some of my plants I just planted in pots on my patio that were damaged. I may have to replace them. And the bird's nest that blew off the beam, and the poor birds that would have to find a new home. Then I remembered the typhoon that hit Myanmar; all that loss. Then came the earthquake in China and the thousands killed and even more left homeless. I also thought about the many wars that have been fought throughout history, and the many more that will no doubtedly come in the future. Life really is one battle after another.

Is it nature's way? Survival of the fittest? There is this constant fight for existence. Nature fights to exist, and humankind fights to exist. There always seems to be something or someone that tries to stop everything. Some fight disease. Some fight literal wars. Some battle survival in other ways, but we all face the struggle of just keeping it together and life going on. And in the end, what's it all for?

The struggle to survive is done for what purpose? To leave it to our children? For what? To better our world? For what? To see our names in lights? Only to be forgotten?

And The Winner Is.....

When I watched Barack Obama's acceptance speech after the North Carolina democratic primary, it felt as if the "acceptance" was for much more than the primary in NC. Obama's speech was more of an "acceptance" of the Democratic nomination to battle John McCain in November. Obama appeared to be calling on all democrats to leave differences behind and join together to defeat the Republicans in Novemeber. I felt excited at Obama's words, as I have during many of his speeches, but this one seemed even more energetic to me. As one writer put it, Obama seemed to be "re-tooling" for the general November election, and I felt it too. Ever since that May 6th NC primary, Obama has seemed to totally ignore Hillary Clinton and move forward with his November presidential campaign. And I gotta say, "I LIKE IT!"

Nine more super delegates have come to Obama's side, including some who had already declared their support for Clinton. The tide is turning to Obama. I, like many others, now feel it. I have stated before that in the February NJ Primary I did vote for Clinton, but if the NJ primary were held in June, as in previous years, I too would be supporting Obama. Obama is planning his strategy against McCain as the democratic primary process moves on. Will Clinton continue to stand in the way?

Many argue that Obama will not be able to defeat McCain. Honestly, I wonder also if America is really ready for an African-American president. Let's face reality: there are some in America that simply will not vote for a black man. But then there are some, keeping it real, that would simply not vote for a woman. I believe that when Obama focuses on McCain, when Obama can really show the differences between himself and McCain's continued Bush agenda, the voters will rally behind Obama. I also believe, and still have faith in Hillary Clinton, that she, her husband, and the rest of the democratic bigwigs will encourage all democrats to support Obama in November. GO BARACK OBAMA!

New Jersey: On The Brink of Gay Marriage

I attended a Garden State Equality Neighborhood Action Summit tonight in Margate. These meetings are happening all over the State the next few weeks, as action is taken to push NJ over the brink and into gay marriage. NJ is on the verge of legalizing gay marriage, with just a few assemblymen and senators left to come on board. Governor Jon Corzine has stated previously that he will sign a marriage equality bill if it crosses his desk, but the governor does not want this issue to sidetrack the presidential election so the governor wants the bill to wait until after the November presidential election.

Tonight's action summit was designed to call legislative leadership to thank them for supporting the gay rights, but encouraging a marriage bill by the end of this year. Letters were also written to local legislators encouraging their support as well. NJ will become the 2nd state in the country to legalize gay marriage in the very near future.

Just across the river in Pennsylvania, a proposed constitutional amendment that would bar same-sex marriage and civil unions passed a key committee on Monday and is now headed for a full vote on the Senate floor. Hopefully this will be defeated when it gets to a full Pennsylvania Senate vote.

A Gas Holiday?

What difference does it really make what McCain, Clinton, or Obama think about a gas tax holiday from Memorial Day to Labor Day? After all, none of them will be President during the summer!

Personally, I have to agree with Obama; it is a political ploy that really will not help anything. It will only save the public a few dollars. It will only encourage more use of gasoline when alternatives to gas should be encouraged. It will not help one iota with our dependence on foreign oil, but it will only make that dependence even stronger.

Funny I Understood Obama's Controversial Comments

It's funny. I understood Barack Obama's words when he said, "...And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations." Obama was referring to the small-town voters in Pennsylvania.

Obama is getting all kinds of flack for what he said. It has been perceived as an elitist attitude. But just think back to the 2004 presidential election. Wasn't it Ohio that pushed George W. over to win another term? Ohio, a place where a wealthy Bush could do nothing for them at all. Bush's promises of keeping everyone safe in the wake of 9-11, and his Christian right cohorts convinced Ohio, a middle class state with alot of unemployment, to support him. Obama is right when he said people who get bitter cling to guns or religion.

People need to stop worrying about words and look at what's meant by those words. What did Obama really mean as opposed to what he actually said!

Urgent Message From GARDEN STATE EQUALITY

The following is an urgent message from Garden State Equality:

"URGENT ACTION ALERT FROM GARDEN STATE EQUALITY -- WITH SHORT NOTICE BEFORE OUR PROTEST THIS TUESDAY NIGHT, APRIL 15, PLEASE FORWARD THIS EMAIL ASAP TO YOUR FRIENDS, COLLEAGUES AND LIST SERVS. PLEASE HELP US GET THE WORD OUT QUICKLY.
To protest a public official's equating being LGBT with pedophilia, please join us this Tuesday night, April 15, 2008 at 7:00 pm, Long Branch City Hall, 344 Broadway, 2nd floor. See below for a full briefing.
Long Branch is about 10 minutes from the Monmouth Mall and just 20 minutes north of Asbury Park. At the last Planning Board meeting in Long Branch, there was an exchange between Planning Board vice chair Edward Thomas and an attorney present to oppose a new building for a very popular, heavily trafficked ice cream shop in a more residential part of the city. Here's what happened, verbatim, as we just heard on the audiotape of the meeting:
Planning board vice chair Edward Thomas told the attorney: “Before you start, I would like to remind you that is an application for a child’s desert shop, and your commentary, if you could please refrain from making any statements extending from your own possibly inappropriate sexual 'preferences' in this matter.”

The attorney said, “I don’t know what inappropriate sexual 'preferences' are.”

Edward Thomas said, “Keep your pedophilia to yourself, and talk to the facts.”

The crowd gasped in horror.

We haven't a clue as to whether the attorney is LGBT or not. Regardless, Edward Thomas' comments were an outrageous homophobic slander on all LGBT people in our state. Garden State Equality has a zero-tolerance policy for homophobia and transphobia in New Jersey. Please join us Tuesday night to tell Edward Thomas he has to resign.

It's such short notice, won't you help us spread the word by forwarding this email asap to your friends, collleagues and list servs? Most of all, please come to our protest Tuesday night and bring others with you.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to be in touch.

Thank you from all of us at Garden State Equality.

Best,
Steven Goldstein
Chair, Garden State Equality"

Illegals The New Devil

Let me start off by stating that the illegal immigration problem in this country is immense and needs addressing. It is, however, a very daunting task when one realizes the number of illegals in this country and the tremendous amount of time and effort it would take to “remove” them all. What do you do with all the children of illegals, just let them live alone when the parents are caught and deported?

Illegal immigrants in this country are now the Devil. All of America’s woes seem to be the fault of illegal immigrants. The US economy is going down the crapper because of the illegals. They steal jobs from American citizens, and burden the “system” and the US economy is now suffering because of the illegals. High unemployment is the fault of the illegals. They have stolen the jobs from Americans and now the US faces such unemployment rates as haven’t been seen in awhile. Why even the high gas prices can be attributed to the illegal immigrants if you ask some Americans.

It seems Americans always have to have someone to blame. If it’s not the Blacks, it’s the Hispanics. If it’s not the Hispanics, it’s the Asians. There is always a minority group that the average white American has to blame for the faults and problems of the US society. Before the fall of the Soviet Union, the communists were the Great Satan. Today, it is the illegal aliens in this country who are destroying it.

Oh How I Love Spring!

I have got to say that Spring is my favorite time of the year. Although April usually signals the start of my seasonal allergies, lasting only through June, I love Springtime! The weather warms and the days are longer, and the color starts to appear all around.
For whatever reason, I woke 6:45AM Saturday morning and could not go back to sleep. I decided to get up and realizing how warm it was outside (around 60), I got dressed in my sweats and did my walk/jog routine. It had rained Friday night and the ground was a little wet, but what a beautiful day it was going to be. I travelled down the bike path close to my place, a few bikers and walkers also with the same thing in mind, but pretty much alone, enjoying the sounds of nature and enjoying the smell of the wet wood around me. I had a great deal of energy and the jog wasn't that bad. After, I felt a tremendous rush of peace....and energy for the day.
Today is not as nice. It has been raining, but not to worry. The rain will only make the flowers and the colors more vibrant when the sun returns! Oh how I love Spring!
