Texas Morality Before Education

The latest edition of THE ADVOCATE (July 5, 2005) gives a brief look at the 2005 Texas legislative session. Here's some of the results:
Passed:
*A proposal to put before voters a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage
*A bill requiring parental consent for unmarried girls under 18 to get an abortion
*A bill strenghtening the rights of parents to use corporal punishment on children
*A bill declaring the chuck wagon the state's official vehicle
Failed:
*A ban on gay and lesbians becoming foster parents
*A ban on "overtly sexually suggestive" routines by cheerleaders
*A pro-medical marijuana bill
*A much-needed school funding reform bill
Also in the article is a quote from Senfronia Thompson, a representative from Houston, just before the legislature passed the marriage amendment:
"I thought we would be debating economic development, property tax relief, protecting
seniors' pensions, and stem cell research to save lives of Texans who are waiting for a
more abundant life. Instead we are wasting this body's time with this political stunt
that is nothing more than constitutionalizing discrimination. The prejudice exhibited
by members of this body disgust me."
Thank God I do NOT live in Texas!

BIOTECH Protestors in Philly

I must admit that I didn't pay alot of attention to the BIOTECH Convention protestors in Philadelphia on Tuesday. I am very sorry that a Philadelphia police officer died during the protests. However, I couldn't help but read on NBC10.com about 4 protestors being arrested and charged in relation to the officer's death. From what I read, none of the protestors is being charged with any murder charge, such a manslaughter. But I couldn't help but notice that the skirmish that resulted in the officer having a heart attack, was a due to water being thrown on the police officer. Is there any possibility that the police at the protest were just a little "hyped up," just waiting for something to happen? I just don't understand how some water being thrown on an officer would result in a skirmish that would end with an officer dead. It will be interesting to see what further investigation discovers. In an earlier interview on television, Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson said that the officer died of a heart attack which could have happened anywhere.

Rally 'Round The Flag......Get Those Votes!

The House of Representatives has approved a constitutional amendement that would ban any desecration of the American flag. The amendment will now go to the Senate where for the first time, it has a good chance of passing. Then, the amendment would go to the states for ratification. The amendment passed the House by a 286-130 vote.
I do not endorse or support the desecration of the American flag, but I really don't see why an amendement to the Constitution is needed. Like it or not, flag burning, or any other act of desecration, is someone's right to free speech. Whether we like it or not, if someone wishes to display his displeasure with the U.S., then he has every right to burn or desecrate the flag.
Adding an amendment, any amendment, to the Constitution is a very serious matter. Our Constitution is not something we can simply change anytime we feel the need. The writers of the Constitution took the matter seriously as a way in which to maintain the freedoms of this country. I cannot help but think that if someone's right to express himself is taken away, what will be next?
I also cannot help but think that maybe Republican controlled Congress is attempting to get some votes to make sure it keeps its majority in 2006. What a rally cry: "SAVE OUR FLAG!"

When Bush Can't Think Of What To Say

When George Bush can't think of anything better to say, he will always use his "ace-in-the-hole": "Marriage should be between 1 man and 1 woman. There should be a constitutiona amendment stating this." Bush repeated his support for a ban on gay marriage at the Southern Baptist Convention.
Can't explain the war in Iraq? Can't explain why so many Americans don't have health insurance? Can't win support for your Social Security overhaul? Then attack those gays!

Disney Boycott by Southern Baptists A Success?

Well, the Southern Baptists have brought Disney to its knees! Or so they think they have. At the Southern Baptist Convention in Nashville, "messengers" are expected to vote to end an 8 year boycott of Walt Disney, Corp. The Rev. Bobby Welch, convention president, said the boycott, which began in 1997 becaus of Disney's openess to gay individuals, has been a success. And because it has been such a success, the Southern Baptists are expected to stop the boycott.
Well, I don't know about anyone else, but to my knowledge, Disneyland and Disney World have not stopped or even lessened their activities. And to my knowledge, Disney still has its "Gay Days." So what victory have the Southern Baptists really won?

Bush Lied! So What?

Those of us like myself, left-winged, liberal, bloggers cannot understand why the media has not jumped all over the now infamous DOWNING STREET MEMO, and beat that horse again and again like other things the media chooses to beat (i.e. Michael Jackson, the Runaway Bride, the Pope's death/election, etc.). Why is the American public not appalled and even more disgusted with Bush's lie? The reason, as given by Mark Morford, SF Gate Columnist is simple. The DOWNING STREET MEMO and all it contains is not really news. "Not anymore." Morford explains further: "Look at it this way: the majority of the nation knows Bush lied like a dog to drive us into an unwinnable (but for his cronies, incredibly profitable) war. The rest either refuse to believe it, or they claim...that the ends (ousting a pipsqueak dictator who was no real threat to anyone and who had been successfully contained for 20 years) justify the means..."
So Bush lied! So what? When Bill Clinton lied, the media was all over that. The Republicans wanted him out of office! (Some would have preferred the old, "off with his head" if they could). But Bush lied, and because of his lie, thousands have died and even more been permanently maimed for life, and very few seem to give a damn!
As the DOWNING STREET MEMO hints at, had 9-11 not occurred, there would be no way in Hell Bush and Tony Blair could have pulled off this Iraq thing. Americans had to be patriotic by NOT speaking badly of Bush's plan. Americans, and I'm afraid our U.S. legislators, didn't want to give the impression they would do anything to stop America from protecting itself.
It is such a shame that the media and Americans continue to look the other way and excuse Bush's lie! Bush is as much a criminal as Saddam Hussein. Bush broke international law and as a direct result, killed thousands. It's time Bush be made to explain and answer for his lie!

What The ??? Bush's Next Move.

After speaking with Bush, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist has reversed his position on not scheduling another Bolton vote and has decided to continue to push for a floor vote on the Bolton nomination. Frist said Bush made it clear that he wants an either up or down vote on the Bolton nomination. Go ahead.....give King George what he wants and vote NO to Bolton.

What's Bush's Next Move On Bolton Going To Be?

Now that Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist has announced that he will not schedule another vote on John Bolton's nomination as U.S. ambassador to the U.N., we will have to see what George Bush's next move will be. Frist has acknowledged there is nothing more he can do to break a Democratic stalemate on the nomination of Bolton. Bush's options now are to either withdraw Bolton's nomination, appoint him to the post without Senate approval when Congress is in recess, or give in to the Democrats by releasing more records on Bolton that the Senate Democrats want before ceasing any filibuster and allowing a vote on Bolton's nomination. The ball is in Bush's court. With his popularity and control appearing to be in the downswing, it will be interesting to see how the White House handles this situation.

Where Were They Before?

A new CNN/USA Today/Gallop Poll shows 6 out of 10 Americans oppose the war in Iraq. Well, guess what people? It's a little late now! Where were all these people before the war? Why were people so in favor of taking out Saddam Hussein prior to the U.S. dropping bombs on Iraq? Back then, the majority favored the war.
I was opposed to the war from the very beginning. I am no genius, but I just couldn't buy Bush's reasons for the war. I knew there were no WMD. If there were, why didn't the UN Inspectors find them? If the U.S. was so confident of where the WMD were, why didn't the U.S. tell the UN Inspectors so they could find them? And I knew Saddam Hussein had nothing to do with 9-11. History has shown that Saddam and Osama bin Laden did not like each other. You didn't have to be too smart to know that. Was Saddam Hussein happy about 9-11? Probably. Did he have anything to do with it? NO!
So, all I can say is that we got ourselves into a war that I, and many others, but not enough, knew wouldn't be as easy as the previous Gulf War. Bush had no plans for this war except "take Saddam out." After that I guess Bush thought the Iraqi's would just be so happy they would do whatever King George said. After all, he got a mandate in the U.S. Why wouldn't a nation like Iraq be so happy and compliant with whatever King George wanted. So, unfortunately, the U.S. got into another Vietnam, a war that we will be involved in for quite some time.
(I just hope all those people who voted for Bush in 2004 won't end up being unhappy with Bush's performance! Ooops, they are!).

Where Do They Get These Ideas?

The NJ Senate Budget Committee approved extending the State's 6% sales tax to health club memberships, downloaded music, tanning salons, limo rides, and some downloaded porn. The Senate Budget Committee, consisting of a democrat majority, voted 9-6 in favor of the measure. Republicans questioned whether the NJ economy could support raising the taxes. Good news, however, is this is largely symbolic since tax legislation must originate in the General Assembly which has not yet taken any measure on the Budget Committee's recommendtion. I guess since the State can't tax cigarette smokers any more (since they are taxed to death as it is), legislators think taxing the healthy is a good idea. Where do they come up with these ideas?

Gay Marriage Gains New Life In California

Assemblyman Mark Leno, an openly gay Democrat in California, plans to revive a measure that would legalize same-sex marriage. Less than 3 weeks ago, the bill died in the California Assembly when it fell 4 votes short of gaining the simple majority it needed to pass the 80 member house.
Leno's bill would have changed the California family code to define marriage as between "two persons" instead of a man and a woman. Leno is going to try a legislative maneuver know as "gut and amend" to change the language of the failed bill. If the new measure passes, the bill would then make its way to the California State Senate, and then possibly to Governor Schwarzenegger's desk.
Massachusett's legalization of gay marriage was by an order of the court. If Leno's bill becomes law, California would be the only state to have gay marriage passed as law. Gay lobyists see this as a possible major defeat for President Bush.
Let's keep our eye on what happens in California. While other states are putting forth legislation to ban gay marriage, California is now on the forefront to legalize gay marriage.
I will be visiting San Francisco soon, and I am sure this will be the topic of many news stories. It will be interesting to talk to people and get a first hand perspective on gay marriage in California.

Democrats Stand Firm Again Against Bolton Nomination

Democrats again prevailed in continuing to defer a vote on UN Ambassador Nominee, John Bolton. The motion to close off debate on Mr. Bolton's nomination, brought forth by Republicans, fell short by 6 votes. Democrats vow to keep the debate going unti the White House submits requested files on Mr. Bolton. Democrats have charged that Mr. Bolton does not have the diplomatic skills for the job of UN Ambassador. Mr. Bolton has reportedly bullied and intimidated subordinates until they agree with Bolton's viewpoint on the issues.
Again, Democrats, despite their minority status, have been successful in keeping the vote on Bolton from occuring. Keep up the good work Dems! Stand up for America!

Get That Bear!

"Well they better tranquilize it and take it away!" That's the response alot of people give when you mention the black bear that's been wandering around Atlantic County, NJ the past couple of weeks. According to the Press of Atlantic City, the Bureau of Wildlife Management is not that concerned with the bear at this time. Mr. Bear is only considered a "category II" bear. He is a nuisance, but not a danger. "The bear hasn't done anything other than show himself to human observation," said Larry Herrighty, Chief of the Bureau of Wildlife Management. Mr. Bear hangs out in the wood, comes out occasionally to eat or maybe sightsee, then goes back into the wood. Not a problem at all.
There are apparently three categories for bear sightings/behavior: III) bears that exhibit normal behavior and do not create a nuisance and are not a threat to public safety; II) nuisance bears that are not an immediate threat to public safety; and I) bears that constitute an immediate threat to life and property. The Bureau of Wildlife Management is observing Mr. Bear, and if need be, will then tranquilize and remove him.
People get so freaked out when dealing with mother nature. Let's face it People, the animals were here long before we were and it is WE who are in THEIR territory. The first thing we humans want to do when confronted with one of nature's creatures is to "get rid of it." People in other parts of the State and country who live with bears on a daily basis don't feel it's any big deal. We all need to learn to be calm and relax and enjoy nature, not fear it.

Proud of Philadelphia

Philadelphia
I consider Philly my home city. (I don't actually live in Philly, but to me, it is MY city). NYC comes in second and I'd have to say San Francisco is up there too. I am very proud of the City of Philadelphia and it's attitude toward the gay community. In the latest edition of OUT TRAVELER (July/August 2005, page 50), there is a story entitled "Philadelphia Freedom" which tells of the City of Brotherly love celbrating one of the first U.S. Gay Rights demonstrations. Often, we associate Stonewall in NYC with the Gay Rights movement, but in 1965, gays and lesbians protested at Independence Hall to make a stand for gay rights. These protests were recently honored at the Equity Forum in April-May in Philly.
Even today, Philly is a great city in which to be gay. Activities and places for gays and lesbians to gather seem to abound in Philly, and I personally have never felt "threatened" at all when in Philly. Domestic partners working in Philly have some of the best benefits in the country. I think Philly too should be proud of the independence it shows toward its citizens and visitors.

Romney's New Effort To Prohibit Gay Marriage in Massachusetts

Kristian Mineau, Massachusetts Family Institute
Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney has endorsed efforts to pass a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage in 2008. Massachusetts, as you may already know, is the only state in which gay marriage is legal. The courts have ruled that the Massachusetts State Constitution protects gays from marrying. The amendment ban would change this, making marriage only legal between a man and a woman.
Romney is currently courting conservative voters for a possible presidential run in 2008. Another political move using gays as the bait. It worked for George Bush. One can only hope the citizens of Massachusetts, which have been living with gay marriage for a year now, will see the hypocracy and divisiveness in Governor Romney's move. In March, a Boston Globe poll indicated that 56% of those surveyed supported gay marriage.

The OTHER Bush Boy Showing His Concern

Gov. Jeb Bush is now asking a prosecutor to investigate why Terri Shiavo collapsed 15 years ago. Gov. Bush is questioning how long it took Michael Shiavo, Terri's husband, to call 911 ater he found Terri after her collapse. Isn't it so nice that the Bush Boys care so much? I'm sure it's not for any political gain.

KUDOS to JOHN GROGAN, Philadelphia Inquirer

Kudos to John Grogan, The Philadelphia Inquirer (June 17, 2005), for acknowledging the many wrong thoughts and feelings about Michael Shiavo, Terri Shiavo's husband. Mr. Grogan ascertains that "The world owes Michael Shiavo an apology. President Bush owes him one. Congress owes him one. Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, the President's brother, owes him one." Mr. Grogan states even further that, "I owe him (Michael Shiavo) an apology, as well." Mr. Grogan explains how all these people "ran roughshod" over states' rights, judicial rights, and even the rights of a husband, in order to prolong Terri Shiavo's life and "crucify" Michael Shiavo for being uncaring and concerned only about himself. Thanks for having the guts to admit a mistak, Mr. Grogan.

Terrell Owens Deal Not All That Bad

"It was certainly substandard." That is how Drew Rosenhaus, Agent, described Terrell Owens' existing contract with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Today's Philadelphia Inquirer (June 16, 2005) took a look at the contract of Terrell Owens and compared it to other receivers in the league. Owen's 7 year contract is worth slightly less than $49 million. The deal included just under $9.2 million in guaranteed money and is worth just a little under $7 million annually over the first 3 years. Only 2 other receivers, Randy Moss and Marvin Harrison, have a better contracts than Owens.
What I think is even more important is the fact that Owens signed the contract, and even gladly accepted a trade from the Baltimore Ravens. I have always thought that a contract was a binding document that had legal ramifications. I guess Owens doesn't see it this way. He thinks one can simply change his contract midstream. When you or I sign a contract, however good or bad it may be, we have to live with it until it's life is over (or ours). Why does Owens think he's any different?
I am sick and tired of sports figures thinking they are better than the rest of us. Thinking they deserve special treatment because they can play a game. When you look at the grand scheme of life, what these men (and women) do, really has no importance whatsoever. So guys......and gals.........and Terrell.............stop thinking our lives depend on you!

A DADDY AND HIS BABY GIRL

With this weekend being Father's Day, HAPPY FATHER'S DAY to all you dads...........

Maybe I'll do something really STUPID and become famous!

Maybe I'll do something really stupid and outrageous and become famous. Maybe they'll make a television movie out of my moronish behavior. That's what's happening with the so-named, RUNAWAY BRIDE these days. Sold her story to TV. Isn't she a hottie in that pic? Doesn't she seem so smart? She's a genious!! But on second thought, if my face was all over America looking like that, I think I'd crawl under a rock. Guess my pride, as small as it might be, wouldn't allow me to make a fool of myself...........for any amount of money!

Thank God Somebody's Finally Demanding An Answer

Finally!! Some congressional Democrats are insisiting that the White House provide more information about what led to the decision to go to war in Iraq. The Democrats, with the now infamous DOWNING STREET MEMO in hand, want some answers.
Rep. John Conyers, D-Michigan, and other Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee were holding a public forum Thursday afternoon to seek answers to the DOWNING STREET MEMO assertations that intelligence and information was "tweaked" to justify the war in Iraq. The "intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy," the DOWNING STREET MEMO recounts.
Rep. Conyers believes that George Bush should respond to questions raised by the DOWNING STREET MEMO. Tony Blair has already denied any allegation about facts being "fixed" in regards to the decision to go to war in Iraq. White House press secretary Scott McClellan indicated that no one in the White House has any plans to respond to the memo.
Democrats and anyone who is concerned about the Bush lies should insist that answers to the allegations be given. Write members of the House Judiciary Committee to let them know your position on this. Demand an explanation!

Shiavo's Parent: Ever Persistent

First of all let me say that having a child die, at any age, is probably one of the most difficult things in the world to deal with. And I grieve with/for Bob and Mary Schindler, Terri Shiavo's parents. But, Mr. & Mrs. Schindler need to face reality: their daughter is deceased, and really died a long time ago. While Terri was alive, the Schindlers fought for Terri's "recovery" despite being told by almost all experts/doctors that it was impossible. They continued their fight to keep Terri "alive" until all legal avenues were exhausted. Now, Mr. & Mrs. Schindler are doubting the autopsy results for Terri. Mr. & Mrs. Schindler need help in grieving, especially in dealing with the "denial" stage of grieving. Mr. & Mrs. Schindler.....Terri is gone. Keep her memories alive and do whatever you need to to keep her legacy alive.

Where oh where have our little Dems gone? (To the tune of: Where Oh where has my little dog gone)

"Where oh where have our little Dems gone? Oh where, oh where can they be? With their balls cut off and their voices mum. Oh where, oh where can they be?" Where is the outrage and condemnation of the Bush Administration? Why haven't Democratic leaders blasted George Bush for all the harm he is doing to our nation? George Bush has divided our nation as I personally have never known. George Bush has only been a friend to his rich peers. No better health care. No better pay. No better nothing! Haven't heard anything from former President Bill Clinton. Haven't heard much from former Vice President and Presidential Candidate Al Gore. Not much from Hilary Clinton. Maybe this is a strategy to keep things quiet until 2008? Maybe it's fear not to stir things up? I'm not sure.

New DOWNING STREET MEMO?

SFGate.Com reported today that another, even more damning DOWNING STREET MEMO has been released. The London Times broke the story of the original now-infamous Downing Street Memo on May 1, 2005. Now The London Times has leaked a secret British Cabinet Office briefing paper dated July 23, 2002. The new document, prepared for Tony Blair and his closest advisers, clearly states that "since regime change was illegal, it was 'necessary to create the conditions' which would make it legal."
The new London Times story, written by Michael Smith, noted that it had confirmed that Blair "had already agreed to back military action to get rid of Saddam Hussein at a summit at the Texas ranch of President George W. Bush three months earlier." Smith explained that fabricating conditions for going to war "was required because, even if ministers decided Britain should not take part in an invasion, the American military would be using British bases. This would automatically make Britain complicit in any illegal U.S. action."
Every Democratic member of Congress, and every Democratic leader in the U.S. should be outraged and DEMANDING an explanation. So far, American leaders have been very reluctant to pursue such an answer from the Bush Administration. Why, I do not know. Where are our Democratic leaders? Are they concerned about being called unpatriotic for continuing the debate on why our men and women are being killed in Iraq, not to mention the thousands of innocent Iraqis?

Back To Reality

Well, now that Michael Jackson is off the hook, let's look at someone who is as GUILTY as guilty can be............George Bush. His approval ratings continue to drop while his disapproval rate climbs. I knew it would only be a matter of time before people began to realize what a goof George Bush is. It's a shame it had to come after his re-election. As I have always said, "Once an idiot, always an idiot!"

Capitalism Gone To The Dogs?

Al Roker and Sharon Osborn
Anybody happen to catch the NBC Dateline story done by Al Roker, entitled PET NATION (Sunday, 6/12/05)?
Al Roker looked at how Americans spend, or waste as I would put it, money on our pets. Americans will spend over $36 Billion on everything from gourmet dog food to designer clothing for dogs. Al follows the life of a canine named Woody, as he is given the royal treatment. In other segments of the show, Al explains how pets receive pretty dresses running upwards of $600.00, $3,000.00 doggie perfume, and $45,000.00 doggie earrings, among other extravagent items. Al also explores the expensive doggie day care centers and spa for your pet.
Is this what capitalism is all about? Do Americans have nothing better to spend their money on than their pets? I have no problem with someone who really cares for their pet. For some, a pet is a "child," and I do not have a problem treating one's pets as such. But, come on! There are people in this country starving! There are people in this country who cannot afford medication to live! There are people in this country who live on the streets! If someone doesn't know where to spend their money, there are plenty of places to do so that would help the human animals around.
It is a wonder that other countries HATE the U.S. For what someone pays to feed their dog one single meal, in some countries, a month's supply of food could be purchased. Maybe countries that look at this and hate the U.

Gay Rights War Now In Schools

In today's Philadelphia Inquirer (Sunday, 6/12/05), there is an interesting article about opponents of gay rights taking their fight to stop schools from educating students about homosexuality or promoting acceptance of gays and lesbians. The opponents of gay rights want sex education programs that include discussions of homosexuality, and after-school clubs that bring gay and straight students together to stop.
In Montgomery County, Maryland, parents went to court to block a health education course that included the topic of homosexuality. In Cleveland, Georgia, gay and lesbian students were barred from forming a high school club of gay and straight youths, which would promote understanding and acceptance of their differences.
The opponents of gay rights feel that such education and teaching will indoctrinate kids into the gay lifestyle. Mathew D. Staver, president of Liberty Counsel, a conservative group opposing gay acceptance said, "We're concerned about the effort to capture youth through indoctrination into the homosexual life-style. Students are a captive audience, and they are being targeted by groups with that as an agenda."
Of course, the American Civil Liberties Union and other gay advocate groups are taking up the fight to keep gay rights in schools intact. I think that gay students, parents of gay students, and anyone who just cares about gay rights and the tolerance of people from different points of view and lifestyles also need to speak up whenever they can.
Gays in this country are really in the fight of their lives. Opponents of gay rights need to realize that simply teaching about homosexuality and acceptance will not "indocrinate" anyone into the homosexual lifesyle. And it is not the goal of any gay/straight alliance club to change any straight kid to a gay kid. This is total BULLSHIT! Believe me, I was taught the straight life. I was indoctrinated into the straight life. And guess what? I AM STILL GAY!!!! No straight clubs or teaching made me straight. And no gay clubs or teaching about homosexuality will make any straight kid gay.
It amazes me that the US is so concerned about being politically correct with almost any minority. But when it comes to gays, it doesn't matter how politically incorrect society is. It is about time this stop. It is about time that America learns to appreciate the differences between gays and staights, and to develop a better understanding and tolerance of each other. It is about time conservative groups begin to stop fearing, and learn to live with, and accept, people of all lifestyles.

HAPPY GAY PRIDE PHILADELPHIA/SOUTH JERSEY

HAPPY GAY PRIDE PHILADELPHIA/SOUTH JERSEY. Below is the lyrics for the Song I AM WHAT I AM, a favorite gay theme. As a gay man who finally got the courage to come out a bit later in life, I am especially drawn to the words, "One life so it's time to open up your close. Life's not worth a damn till you can shout out I am what I am." Or, Biblically speaking, "The truth shall set you free." Never have I experience the joy that I have felt since I stopped being someone else, and lived as who I was made by God to be.
Gays in the U.S. were dealt quite a blow in the 2004 election. Several states have even banned gay marriage. But I encourage every man, woman, child, and everyone inbetween, to celebrate GAY PRIDE this year. Perhaps you'll celebrate by "styling it up" on the streets. Perhaps you'll spend it with your significant other, or alone, looking for that significant other. Maybe you'll remember partners and relationships gone by. But whatever way you chose to celebrate GAY PRIDE, CELEBRATE IT..........not alone in your closet, but openly.
I AM WHAT I AM (as sung by Gloria Gayner)
"I am what I am
I am my own special creation
So come take a look
Give me the hook
Or the ovation
It's my world
That I want to have a little pride
My world
And it's not a place I have to hide in
Life's not worth a dam
Till I can say I am what I am
I am what I am
I don't want praise
I don't want pity
I bang my own drum
Some think it's noise
I think it's pretty
And so what if I love each sparkle and each bangle
Why not see things from a different angle
Your life is a shame
Till you can shout out I am what I am I am what I am
And what I am needs no excuses
I deal my own deck
Sometimes the aces sometimes the deuces
It's one life and there's no return and no deposit
One life so it's time to open up your closet
Life's not worth a dam till you can shout out I am what I am
I am what I am
I am what I am
And what I am needs no excuses
I deal my own deck sometimes the aces sometimes the deuces
It's one life and there's no return and no deposit
One life so it's time to open up your closet
Life's not worth a dam till you can shout out I am what I am
I am I am
I am good
I am I am
I am strong
I am I am
I am worthy
I am I am
I belong
I am I am
I am somebody
I am as good as you
Yes I am"

How Dumb Do They Think We Are?

Pat Tillman
When is the US military going to stop treating us like we're dumb, naive little kids? The Army on Thursday issued a denial that it attempted to cover up the friendly fire death of Pat Tillman, the former pro football player, in Afghanistan. The army said procedural mistakes were to blame for the slow acknowledgement of the circumstances of Tillman's death. Was it procedural mistakes that also, quite plain and simple, killed Tillman?
Everytime there is a wrong move or a mistake made by the US military, the Pentagon, or the White House, the first course of action is to deny any wrong, and take no blame. Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo Bay, the entire reason for the Iraq war are prime examples. Then, after continual prodding, some other reason is given for the wrong. It is never bad judgement or someone's mistake....at least not the real person who made the mistake. To this day, George Bush has never admitted one mistake while in the White House. But then I guess since he gets all his orders directly from God, there could be no misjudgement or mistakes made. George Bush's administration are just following his lead.
And when are the US citizens going to stop buying the lame-ass reasons and excuses given by Bush & Company? Wake up, US, and start making these "leaders" take some responsibility.

African-American Study Mandatory

First of all, let me say that I believe ALL people should hold onto their cultural background, language, and customs. NOBODY should give up their heritage. Even though I do not speak another language fluently, I have always believed children growing up in bilingual homes should maintain the knowledge of, and use of, the family's native language. Kids should feel proud of who they are and what their background is. However, there is also the need as Americans to be able to communicate and "fit in" to our U.S. society. We are all different, but must at times be the same. I think Philadelphia schools (June 9, 2005) mandating African-American studies is wrong. Despite what is said, I cannot help but believe this is being done only to be politically correct. What about Asia-American studies, Hispanic-American, or Middle Eastern studies, or any other culture growing up in the U.S.
African-American studies, like any other cultural group, should be included in American history and how that particular group has impacted on the American society. I agree that different cultural studies should be made available as electives. And, depending on what part of the country one lives, different cultural studies may be made available. But to single out African-American as a MANDATORY course of study is not appropriate.

Bear In My Backyard

Seems there's a black bear wandering around in my backyard. Well, not literally in MY back yard, but in my area of Atlantic County. The bear made his first appearance on Monday in Egg Harbor City. By Tuesday he was seen in the Mays Landing (Hamilton Township) area. Mr. Bear traveled 25 miles in one day, crossing several major highways on his quest for......well, we really don't know what for. Perhaps a mate? He is a young male bear on an adventure. Mr. Bear reportedly can run as fast as 30 mph when moving at his fastest pace. Hopefully people won't freak too much and just leave him alone. He is definitely more afraid of those humans he comes across; he spent part of yesterday hiding out in a tree. When the watchers finally gave Mr. Bear some room, he came out of the tree and went on his merry journey. First a beluga whale in the Delaware. Now a black bear in south Jersey. What next?

Not the Usual NJ State Employee Benefit

On 5/19/05, I posted a discussion about my emloyment with the State of NJ, and how I, like thousands of other NJ State employees, receive no special benefits for doing our jobs. I stated that it is the minority of NJ State employees who receive special perks that make the news. Today's THE STAR LEDGER reported such a story about Robert Codey, brother of acting Governor Richard Codey, filing for a September retirement from his attorney general's post, clearing the way for him to begin collecting a $98,000.00 per year pension. The different thing about this is that Mr. Codey's pension was boosted by an unusual state government salary-sharing arrangement with Union County.
Seems that last September, an arrangement was approved by an all-Democrat Union County Freeholder Board in which Union County supplemented Codey's $93,268.00 state salary with an additional $46,731.00 for work Codey was to do in for the county. Under special pension rules for prosecutors, Codey's retirement pay is 70% of his highest 12 months earnings. (Ironically, the arrangement was done exactly 12 months prior to Codey's retirement). For regular state employees who are have 25 years of service and have reached the age of 55 (considered "full" retirement), retirement pay is less than 50% of their average highest 3 years salary.
It really does come down to who you know. As I previously stated in my 5/19/05 post, most State of NJ employees receive no special, extravagant benefits either while working or at retirement. But these few examples such as Mr. Codey, make the news, and the general public thinks these perks apply to ALL state employees. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Rick Perry and TEXAS!

Please see Pax's discussion of Texas Governor Rick Perry.............and please, send an e-mail.

I'M NOT SURE ABOUT HOWARD!

Howard Dean, Democratic National Committee Chairman, said in San Francisco this week that Republicans are "pretty much a monolithic party. They all behave the same. They all look the same. It's pretty much a white Christian party." Howard Dean went on further to say that the "Republicans are not very friendly to different kinds of people....We're (the Democrats) more welcoming to different folks, because that's the type of people we are..."
I wish I could agree with Howard and say it's that simple. Problem is, as can be seen from the 2004 presidential election, it was the Republican party that appealed to more of the "different" people. It was the Republican party that attracted more of those voters, such as Spanish and Afican-American, who traditionally supported the Democratic candidates. More and more minority folk seem to be accepting the Republican party. If the Democratic party had so many of the "different" kinds of people, maybe George Bush would not be President today.
For whatever reason, the Republican party was better able to sell their wares in the 2004 election. The "different" people apparantely bought what the Republicans were selling. Did the Republicans do such a good sales job, or did the Democrats simply not sell their position well enough?
I am not sure what it is going to take for the Democrats to really reach out to the "different" people. But maybe the Democrats need to push the values that matter most to Americans in a stronger manner. Maybe the Democrats need to push those values such as jobs, health care, equality for all people, family (however different they may be), and the idea that we all can be one America, despite our differences. Maybe the Democrats need to stop being so apologetic for their message and "preach it" despite offending.....For that I give Howard Dean credit.

Pope Benedict and Gay Marriage

Guess we know where Pope Benedict XVI stands on gay marriage. He said that same-sex unions are fake and expressions of "anarchic freedom" that threaten the future of the family. It is sad that heterosexual marriages are so weak that 2 gay people marrying would threaten the existence of marriage and family. It is even more sad that a "fake" god, like the Pope, would make such a statement.

Marijuana and Medicine

I still cannot get over the Supreme Court's ruling about medicinal marijuana being illegal. The Congress needs to pass legislation allowing states to control marijuana for medicinal purposes, at the least. At the most, Congress should legalize marijuana. See the benefits and humane uses of medicinal marijuna.

MEDICINAL MARIJUANA: What's the big deal?

The Supreme Court ruled today that state medical marijuana laws do not protect users from the federal ban on the drug. Therefore, it is illegal to use medicinal marijuana no matter what state law states.
The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 in favor of the Bush Administration, which appealed a 2003 court decision it lost, seeking a ruling on whether or not prosecution of medical marijuana users under the federal Controlled Substances Act was constitutional.
I don't get it! I just don't get it! What is the big fear in this country about marijuana? Why is that for so long, as long as I can remember, there has been this resounding taboo against marijuana, even for medicinal purposes? Opium is a legally used medicinal drug, but marijuana, has this unexplainable stigma attached to it. I always thought as a young person, that by the time I was all grown up, marijuana would be legal, just like alcohol. But I guess I was wrong. I don't understand this, and I especially do not understand how marijuana, or any drug that has proven medical benefits, can be withheld from people by our government.
Justic Sandra Day O'Connor, in dissent to today's ruling, said that states should be allowed to set their own rules. I always thought that one of the Republicans positions was that states should govern without federal government involvement? Guess I was wrong on that too!
One of the plaintiffs in the medical marijuana case, Diane Monson, stated that "I'm going to have to be prepared to be arrested," as she vowed to defy the court ruling and continue to smoke marijuana. Monson smokes marijuana several times a day to relieve back pain. Her physician prescribed marijuana in 1997, after prescription medication did not work and made Ms. Monson sleepy.
Diane Monson, and all medicinal marijuana users, have my support. The government of the U.S. should not limit any medication works for someone. It is just what the doctor ordered!

2005 TONY AWARDS

Did you catch the 59th American Theatre Wing's Tony Awards last night? It was an enjoyable show and great entertainment. The one thing I always notice on the Award show is that theatre people seem to be the one group of entertainers who don't really give a shit about introducing their "partner." Seeing 2 guys kiss on the Tony Awards is common, and there isn't the "fear" that being openly gay will hurt the career of these people. I not only congratulate the Tony Award winners, but I admire their courage and dedication to the ones they love.

GEORGE BUSH: THE SPOILED MAN-CHILD

See what Mark Morford, San Fransico Chronicle columnist has to say about the spoiled child, George W. Bush............

ANOTHER COUNTRY MOVES FORWARD

Swiss voters approved giving same-sex couples more rights in a national referendum. Again, while the U.S. continues to take more and more steps to take away its citizens equal rights, other modernized civilizations throughout the world continue to increase its citizens rights. This morning, Texas Governor Rick Perry was to sign legislation that would put a same -sex marriage ban on the ballot for November. What a shame that the U.S., concerned about freedom around the world, cannot even give its own citizens freedom. And what a shame it is that the U.S. continues to be so greatly influenced by the ultra conservative, freedom-stopping, religious right wing.....and we continue to allow it to happen.

THE OTHER ATLANTIC CITY

Just got back from strolling THE WALK, the Atlantic City Outlets. THE WALK has alot of designer named stores like American Eagle Outfitters, Izod, Liz Claiborne, Tommy Hilfiger, and Nautica, and Banana Republic just to name a few. There are several eateries and speciality stores as well. I always tell people that when visiting THE WALK, you will not even think you're in Atlantic City......you don't spend alot of money for one thing!

GAYS THE NEW (WELL OLD) DEVIL?

Tony Campolo
Tony Campolo is a professor of Sociology at Eastern University, St. Davids, Pa. He is an evangelical Christian. And believe it or not, Dr. Campolo is a Democrat and a Christian who seems to really put his words into practice. I can remember sitting in church as a young man listening to Dr. Campolo, who was the guest speaker for the day. I cannot say to this day exactly what he spoke about, but I do recall he was a very good speaker. He used illustrations and kept my attention as he spoke. I however, did not know at the time that Dr. Campolo was as liberal minded as he is.
According to the latest copy of THE ADVOCATE (6/21/05), Dr. Campolo, in an interview with Michelle Cottle, THE NEW REPUBLIC (5/23/05) quoted philosopher Eric Hoffer in his 1951 book, TRUE BELIEVER. Eric Hoffer said "Mass movements can rise and spread without belief in god, but never without belief in a devil." Dr. Campolo further explained by saying, "Hitler had the Jews and the communists has the capitalists. I content that it's easy to rally people around opposition to gay people. In the minds of many, they have become the devil that must be destroyed if America is to be saved."
How true this is. Look at one of the biggest issues of the 2004 Presidential election. George Bush (well, actually Karl Rove) intentionally brought up the subject of the need for a constitutional ban against gay marriage knowing that it would solidify all those who saw gays as the devil. Then, despite what a moron George Bush is, at least he wants to defeat the devil and lead the nation in a righteous fashion. My prayer is that people in this country will see that there is much more threat to the survival of our nation than gays. Believe it or not, most gays are law abiding, tax paying, hard working, family-oriented people who also want a successful U.S.

MORE GOOD NEWS FOR NJ

NJ voters favor 55%-40% allowing gay marriages, and oppose any attempts by lawmakers to constitutionally ban same-sex marriage. This according to THE GARDEN STATE EQUALITY-ZOBGY INTERNATIONAL poll.

ANOTHER STEP BACK TO BIGOTRY AND DISCRIMINATION

Texas Governor Rick Perry plans to visit a Christian school this Sunday to sign 2 pieces of legislation, one restricting abortion, and the other will put on the ballot a ban on same-sex marriage. Just another step backward. Another step toward further divisiveness, bigotry, and discrimination.

GEORGE BUSH & IMPEACHABLE CRIMES

John Kerry plans on confronting Congress with "The Downing Street Memo", a document showing George Bush committed impeachable crimes by falsifying evidence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.
"The Downing Street Memo" first reported on May 1, 2005 by the London Times and drafted by Matthew Rycroft, is supposed to be minutes of a July 2002 meeting where British Prime Minster Blair allegedly admitted that the Bush administration "fixed" intelligence to create a reason to go to war with Iraq.
Albeit that memo contains no direct quotes from either Bush or Blair and is slim on evidence implicating Bush, John Kerry nonetheless feels Congress needs to take a serious look at what evidence was real and manufactured in making an argument to go to war in Iraq.
If George Bush is not impeached for lying, he should be impeached for crimes against humanity at the least.

MISTREATING THE QURAN?

So I guess Newsweek wasn't all that inaccurate after all. Seems the Pentagon has confirmed that the Muslim holy book was indeed mistreated by U.S. soldiers. The report says the Quran was only kicked, wet, pissed on, and defamed. But as is usual with reports out of the White House and Pentagon, alot more probably really happened. So, maybe the Pentagon needs to give Newsweek an apology. And maybe Dick Chaney needs to give Amnesty International an apology.

SHUT UP? GOOD!

Hey Terrell! Please keep your vow to shut up, and just get back to work! If you don't like it here in Philly, then break your contract, take whatever penalties/fines come along with that, and move on. Philly needs a championship team, not your arrogance or any other players'............

MICHAEL JACKSON: A PERV? A VICTIM? A MORON?

So the Michael Jackson molestation trial is about to come to an end. The jury has been given its final instructions before deliberating, and the closing arguments have been made. Is he guilty? Is he innocent? In a few short days we will know the jury's verdict.
I have waivered during this trial (not that I have watched it daily). Whatever the outcome, I believe Michael meant no harm to any child involved. Michael himself is nothing more than a child, a 40- something year old man, stuck in a child's mind. He lives in a child's fantasy, and is one screwed up guy. Never having a childhood of his own may be to blame. His abusive father may be the blame. Being surrounded by people that allowed Michael to do whatever Michael wanted to do may be to blame. Perhaps Michael was just "acting out" sex play with boys like boys do?
This however, is no excuse for a grown man to sexually molest a child if that is indeed what happened. I feel the defense attorneys raised enough questions during the trial to cause enough doubt in the jury's mind to find Michael Jackson NOT GUILTY of child molestation. Remember, in order to find one guilty in a criminal law trial there must be evidence beyond reasonable doubt.
But if Michael Jackson is found GUILTY, then I will be happy with the jury's decision. They will have listened to the evidence and come to their conclusion .
I just hope that if the verdict is NOT GUILTY that Michael Jackson and all his consultants will not take this as a sigh of relief to continue life as is. Michael Jackson should think long and hard about his relationships with any children. I cannont believe for the life of me why Michael did not learn this lesson after the last accustation of child molestation, but I hope he learns from this experience. Don't be a moron Michael! Stay away from children and be a man!

ENCOURAGING NEWS OR NOT?

Seems like U.S. employers announced 82,283 job cuts in May, an increase from 57,861 jobs cut in April. The May job cuts is a 12% increase from a year ago. All this is from statistics released in a monthly report issued by Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Computer companies led the rise in job cuts in May, which was contributed mainly to a weak European economy.
Not being an economist, this sounds like a lot of jobs being lost. But the report said it is too early to have concerns about a softening U.S. economy. If job cuts do not lessen in June, July, and August, then it might be time to be concerned about the strength of the economy.
So I guess we will have to wait and see what this all means for the economic outlook in the U.S. But to me, dispite being told the U.S. economy is on the rebound, this report raises concerns. Since the Bush Administration has been so reluctant to tell the truth since January 2000, I would watch economic factors, such as job cuts, with a close eye for the truth.

ANOTHER BUSH??

Hasn't 2 Bushes been enough??!! Can America really stand another Bush in the White House? Maybe if it is far enough in the future, Jeb could rebuild the rebuilt Iraq? By then I'm sure whoever is in charge in Iraq will hate the U.S. again............
