GAYS THE NEW (WELL OLD) DEVIL?

Tony Campolo
Tony Campolo is a professor of Sociology at Eastern University, St. Davids, Pa. He is an evangelical Christian. And believe it or not, Dr. Campolo is a Democrat and a Christian who seems to really put his words into practice. I can remember sitting in church as a young man listening to Dr. Campolo, who was the guest speaker for the day. I cannot say to this day exactly what he spoke about, but I do recall he was a very good speaker. He used illustrations and kept my attention as he spoke. I however, did not know at the time that Dr. Campolo was as liberal minded as he is.
According to the latest copy of THE ADVOCATE (6/21/05), Dr. Campolo, in an interview with Michelle Cottle, THE NEW REPUBLIC (5/23/05) quoted philosopher Eric Hoffer in his 1951 book, TRUE BELIEVER. Eric Hoffer said "Mass movements can rise and spread without belief in god, but never without belief in a devil." Dr. Campolo further explained by saying, "Hitler had the Jews and the communists has the capitalists. I content that it's easy to rally people around opposition to gay people. In the minds of many, they have become the devil that must be destroyed if America is to be saved."
How true this is. Look at one of the biggest issues of the 2004 Presidential election. George Bush (well, actually Karl Rove) intentionally brought up the subject of the need for a constitutional ban against gay marriage knowing that it would solidify all those who saw gays as the devil. Then, despite what a moron George Bush is, at least he wants to defeat the devil and lead the nation in a righteous fashion. My prayer is that people in this country will see that there is much more threat to the survival of our nation than gays. Believe it or not, most gays are law abiding, tax paying, hard working, family-oriented people who also want a successful U.S.

True so true. Gays are the new Jews, and the Republican Party is the new Nazi Party. If Democrats don't stand up,and stand up fast, our country is headed in the same direction that 1930's Germany was headed.

I,too, heard Dr. Campolo speak many times in my youth. "It's Friday, but Sunday's coming." It's still one of the most powerful messages I've ever heard, and one of the few sermons I remember...

Thanks, Tony!
